Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is about helping people notice and respond to God’s presence and activity in their lives.

It’s a practice for people who wish to grow in their relationship with God or the divine.

People often seek spiritual direction when they sense something stirring in their souls and they don’t know how best to respond. Sometimes it’s to seek guidance for making a decision. Other times it’s because their usual ways of connecting with God are not working, or maybe God seems quiet or absent in their lives. Sometimes people seek direction simply to become closer to God.

A spiritual director is a guide to help you along your spiritual journey.

Spiritual directors create a safe space to explore your feelings and experiences of the divine. They do not have all the answers, nor do they give advice. Instead, they listen to you, ask meaningful questions, and support you in paying attention to how God is speaking to you in your everyday experiences. Margaret Guenther calls spiritual directors “midwives of the soul.”

It's hard to cultivate what’s being born in you if you don’t take time to pause, listen, notice, and reflect. Spiritual direction sessions involve 50 minutes of conversation and contemplative practices like prayer, breathing exercises, silence, and journaling to intentionally engage with what’s stirring in your soul.
